STEP 1. As with all my steps I will tell you to start off with guidelines to help make this tutorial alot easier.Starting at the front, draw a small circle for the front of the head. Then from that draw an oblong shape for the neck of the phoenix, from that draw the largest of all the circles for the middle of the body. After you do all that, you can start adding the shapes of the firebird starting at the top with a tall triangle shape for the feathers that sit on top of the head. Than from that draw the line art through out the step as seen above. Take your time and move onto the next step.   STEP 2. Here is where you will start to sketch i the face and some of the feathers. Starting at the head you can start sketching in the definition by feathering up the face, and under the beak. Sketch in the phoenix's eye which is an almond shape, feather up the long feather that hangs from the side of the face. Start detailing the formation of the wings, and tail. As you can see it is going to have beautiful looking feathers throughout the body. So what I want you to do is perfect this step, take your time, and when you fell like it is good enough move on to the next step.   STEP 3. This step is going to be time consuming because you literally have to sketch out the individual feathers that lay all over the phoenix's body. I always say start at the top and work your way down because you can keep track of what you did and what needs to be done next. Detail the beak, face, head, eyes, body, wings, and feathers. You might be asking yourself "what body"? the body goes right along the sketch starting behind the head, the torso is the lowest part of the sketch, and as you can see how it dips inward and comes out again, that is the hind quarter of the bird. You can see it alot better in the line art of the sketch in the last step.   STEP 4. This step still consist of detailing and defining the feathers. You are also going to be sketching out the wing that is on the other side of the birds face. Detail that wing as well with feathers and make sure you give the illusion of the feathers being light and airy. There is so much detail in this sketch and I am proud to be sharing it with you all. After you are finished with the detailing, erase all the guidelines that you drew for the firebird in step 1. You can then move onto the final step which is always going to be the line art.   STEP 5. Here you have it, my sketch on a phoenix. I labeled this sketch in my book as "phoenix rising. I hope you had fun learning how to draw this firebird that has been around for centuries in many cultures around the world.   Step 1. Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5.
