STEP 1. Draw the two ovals lightly with a No.2 or HB pencil. Make sure you draw it as seen in the picture. As they are not the perfect egg and circle shapes.   STEP 2. Now draw in the bisecting lines to balance her facial features and the umbrella handle.   STEP 3. Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for Mary Poppin's hair line and head mass.   STEP 4. You can draw in the lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, and d. for mouth.   STEP 5. Now draw Mary Poppins and the umbrella handle's eyes.   STEP 6. Examine the guidelines and notice how Mary's nose and mouth appear in the guidelines... don't forget her teeth. Now draw in the umbrella's beak.   STEP 7. Now draw in her hair, face outline, and neck. Stay close to how the jawline is below the guideline. Once finished, switch over to the umbrella handle and draw in the neck. Don't forget those pointed feathers.   STEP 8. Now you can draw in her hat and scarf. Look closely at how the lines flow with the guidelines as you did with the rest of the drawing. Take your time. Patience is your best friend because with it, you'll be able to complete your drawing. If you haven't already, you can now erase your guidelines. The lines you couldn't erase, go ahead and blend them in if you will be shading your drawing.   STEP 9. I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.   STEP 10. Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.   STEP 11. This time Acrylics has won! Sandpaper, the new kid on the block has to take a back seat to my wonderful Titanium White or Opaque White Watercolors for HIGHLIGHTS! Yaaaa! Try it, you'll like it!   STEP 12. The picture that goes with this step shows two different ways to hold your pencil to acquire certain effects. OVERHAND: Holding a sharpened pencil in normal writing form with fingers in the middle or near the lead gives you great control and thin/detailed strokes. UNDERHAND: Holding the pencil at a 45 degrees or near level to the table with end of pencil under your palm with pencil on the flat side, gives you large shading coverage. With the No.2 pencil, you have the exposed lead side to shade with. But for a wider swath, use that Cretacolor Monolith graphite pencil with no wood casing. The whole sharpened portion is all lead, like in the step's picture. Practice the toning values to help you with control.   STEP 13. PENCIL STROKES & TONE, SHADING, TEXTURE -- For your convenience, I have inserted this step with different pencils, strokes to use. And you can study the shapes that make up this drawing universe, along with tone, shading, and texture.   STEP 14. The picture here is a great exercise for value shading. I've got a little secret tip for you to make things easier. You can download this to your desktop. First click on the picture to have access to full size. By right clicking on your mouse, you can select "Save Image As." It should save to your desktop.   STEP 15. After printing out a number of the above template, practice shading in the values like this picture. You become familiar with this shading technique that gives you more control and confidence.   STEP 16. Since Mary Poppins is wearing a hat, I would like to give you a drawing tip. An easy way to get the hat right is to draw the crown to fit directly over the skull, not her hair, no matter what angle is used for the hat as you can see from the picture. Check out how some of the crown of the hat doesn't touch the skull. This is because of the shape of the hat. Why do I have a running center line on the 1st & 3rd picture? Because centering the hat on the face is a guide to draw the hat on the head more accurately.   STEP 17. This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied light medium and medium gray to her face, scarf, and hair. Medium and dark gray was applied to her hat, shoulder, and as shadow to her hair. I applied medium to dark gray for the umbrella. Looks like a mess. That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.   STEP 18. What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a blending stump (since it won't leave lines and will cover a larger area) and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil). Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (her hair, eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, cheeks, side of face, mouth, and chin. I also used this application on the umbrella. I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas. I've lightened areas with the kneaded eraser. And I took a light gray pastel and made circular/chain-like shapes in her scarf. To really darken her eyes, I used black pastel and a blending tortillon.   STEP 19. I sketched in darker with my 0.7mm mechanical and 9B pencil his eyes & mouth. I placed my 9B pencil flat and barely touching the paper went over the darker side of her face. Between the shadowed hair strands, I used the point of the 9B.   STEP 20. To blend, I twisted and curled my stump around like a car on a winding road in-between her hair. *sorry for my ranting* Then I sprayed with "Krylon Workable Fixatif" to adhere the pencil & pastel to the paper for a non-smudging and workable surface. Let's check out the next step.   STEP 21. For the background, I took my medium gray pastel and applied around the edge of the picture to give a circular illusion. Then I added a lighter gray pastel for a blending look. I took a soft piece of tissue and softly blended in the wide circle shape of the background. I had noticed in the reference pic that the edge of her hat had nubs. So I took my 9B graphite pencil and added them.   STEP 22. *clap your hands!* I have finally FINISHED! I took the pure white opaque watercolor and added more highlights to the cherries on her hat, eye sparkles, lip shine, more white scarf details, sparkle on the umbrella's head and feathers. This pastel stuff really works well on Vellum paper that's nice and smooth. I am totally satisfied. And I hope you are too with your creation. To help out with specific areas of highlights, tone, texture, etc., the next two following steps will show you.   STEP 23. Without highlights, your picture would have a flat appearance.
