STEP 1. Here we have front, side, and 3/4 view of the same anime girl. Notice the vertical lines that help us keep all of the facial features at the same height. An anime head is essentially a large circle with a small oval attached to help understand the curve of the cheeks. The facial guidlines that run vertically and horizontally along the two circles show where to place the facial features. Notice how the eyes sit on the vertical guideline.   STEP 2. Let's continue with some facial ratios. Generally speaking, the width of an eye is the same as the width in between those eyes. If you then take the height of the eye and place it below the eye, that will be where the face will start to curve inwards. As for the length of the ear, it starts where the eye starts and ends at the bottom of the nose. Of course, depending on style, these ratios may change, but it's important to understand the basics of anime anatomy before making such changes.   STEP 3. Draw a large circle and add an oval to the bottom half, then add the guidelines, making sure to curve them in the way that the head will be curved. For this girl, we'll be angling her head slightly downward and to the right.   STEP 4. Sketch in lines for the chin and cheek. Notice how the line dips in where the circle and oval also dip in.   STEP 5. Sketch in the neck, making sure to not draw it too thick or thin.   STEP 6. The ear generally starts where the top of the eye starts and ends at the bottom of the nose, but when the face is tilted upwards of downwards, the ear changes position. Our anime girl is facing down, so her ear will be higher.   STEP 7. Sketch in the nose and the mouth. There two facial features are fairly easy to do, but there are so many different styles to choose from. Here are some examples of different noses. Notice how some include the bridge of the nose while others don't. There's even one style of nose that draws the shadow and not the nose itself.   STEP 8. Sketch in the anime girl's eyes. She has a regular shaped eye, but depending on your character's personality, you may want to give them one of the other eyes shown. For example, perky characters may have eyes slanted upwards, while cute characters have rounded eyes.   STEP 9. Now that you understand anime facial features, here are some examples of how you can do anime facial features just by changing the mouth and eyebrows.   STEP 10. Sketch in the back of the hair. The hair should curve with the head and should be raised off of the head slightly to give the impression of fullness.   STEP 11. Now for the bangs. Notice how they curve slightly as they fall on the forehead. Adding the correct curves to your hair will create realism in your drawings.   STEP 12. With your guidelines erased, you now have the completed line art for an anime girl. Color you line art or with your new knowledge on anime faces, why not draw some of your original characters.   Step 1. Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Step 6. Step 7. Step 8. Step 9. Step 10.
