STEP 1. Draw the oval lightly with a No.2 or HB pencil. Make sure you draw it as seen in the picture.   STEP 2. Now draw in the bisecting line to balance his facial features.   STEP 3. Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for hair line and head mass.   STEP 4. You can draw in the lines a. for eyebrows, b. for eyes, c. for nose, and d. for mouth.   STEP 5. Now draw Barry's eyebrows, eyes, and glasses.   STEP 6. Examine and notice how his wrinkles, cheek shadow, nose and mouth appear in relation to the guidelines. Now draw them in.   STEP 7. Now look closely at how the lines of his hair flow together within the guidelines. Take your time. Patience is your best friend because with it, you'll be able to complete your drawing.   STEP 8. Now draw in the profile of his face, cheek, chin, and jawline.   STEP 9. Last but not least, draw in his neck (with wrinkles) and collar. If you haven't already, you can now erase your guidelines. The lines you couldn't erase, go ahead and blend them in if you will be shading your drawing.   STEP 10. I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.   STEP 11. Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Take you kneaded eraser and dab off the shadow outlines or dark lines with your kneaded eraser for a more realistic look as you shade. Shading transition from dark to light (or visa versa) should be smooth... no harsh lines. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.   STEP 12. I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.   STEP 13. Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump.   STEP 14. Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.   STEP 15. This is the first start with the pastel application. If you do the whole picture in a pencil sketch, this is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied light to medium gray to his face, hair, neck, and collar. I added charcoal gray to the glass frame. Looks like a mess, but that's how a some beginning projects will appear. Keep patience with you and keep applying those layers of whites, grays & blacks. You'll have a great outcome.   STEP 16. Here I used my blending stump to "draw" in more lines, add more shading to his hair, eyebrows, face, neck, and collar. The areas I needed to whiten, I did in the next step.   STEP 17. I sketched in more shading into her cheek lines and darkened her eyebrows and eye mascara with my 9B and 0.7mm pencils. With the 0.7mm mechanical pencil (HB lead), I defined his short hair.   STEP 18. Drawing like this is a gradual buildup. I keep sketching, blending and sketching some more. This time, I first blended the pencil sketches with my toritllon to give a smooth transition and to darken that area so it would lift so easily when smoothing with a soft tissue. I added more dark tones and details to his hair so it would pop out when adding white highlighted hair strands. More dark tones are added to his face and neck with a 9B graphite pencil. I've also took a kneaded eraser to add some more white hair strands and a bit of highlight to his lips.   STEP 19. Here I added lots of highlights in his hair from looking at the reference picture. You can do this with white pastel, white titanium acrylic or watercolor paint. I also lightened his jaw area and smoothed it more by blurring with my digital program. I added eyeglass highlight near his left eye facing us and gave him a few more light lashes. I am closing out now. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on Barry Weiss from Storage Wars. Hey, he kind of reminds me of the handsome Sean Connery, with those sleepy eyes (and that's a compliment)! All of you have been wonderful and it has been a great pleasure to do this tutorial with you. Please fav, comment, and show your love here. And I will definitely reply back soon or eventually.
