STEP 1. Draw the oval lightly with a No.2 or HB pencil. Make sure you draw it as seen in the picture.   STEP 2. Now draw in the bisecting red line to balance his facial features.   STEP 3. Sketch lightly the crescent red lines for hair line and head mass.   STEP 4. I hope these extra lines will make it easy for the distorted facial proportions. You can draw in the lines a. for the 1st eyebrow, the thin line underneath is for top of 1st eyelid and 2nd eyebrow facing you. b. for eyes, thin line underneath is for top of nostril. c. for bottom of nose, thin line is for top of crooked mouth. d. for mouth.   STEP 5. Now draw Wiz's eyebrows and eyes with eye tattoo.   STEP 6. Observe where his features appear in relation to the guidelines. Draw in his nose, wrinkles, mustache, and mouth.   STEP 7. Watch closely how Wiz's jaw and chin lines relate to the guidelines. Don't forget to add the shadow lines and wrinkles. As you draw, you will have more accuracy.   STEP 8. His hair is pretty simple. When you sketch in his hair, add those small wavy lines. This will help as you shade it in. Also draw in his ear. The reason for Wiz's strange linear appearance is lots of these areas will be shaded in.   STEP 9. Now draw in his shoulder, collar, and the tattoos on his neck. Take your time. If you haven't already, you can erase your guidelines.   STEP 10. I made this line drawing especially for you if you don't want to do the pencil shading and blending part. Otherwise, let us continue to the pencil drawing part.   STEP 11. Here is the outline done with a 0.7mm mechanical pencil. Look closely and see if your lines look something like this. You can erase if certain areas like the eyes or nose don't line up. Observe how there are more details, like the dots. Be patient with this, it's not as complicated as you may think. As you do more pictures, this will come easier to you.   STEP 12. I didn't want to skip this. The first picture shows how to hold your pencil for Overhand (great for writing & details) and Underhand (great for shading large areas in wide strokes). You can practice tone shading and take it a step further with the Tone Exercise.   STEP 13. Here is how the tools look. I used the 0.7mm 2B mechanical pencil, 9B pencil, tissue, and the blending stump.   STEP 14. Best thing you can do when drawing hair is to establish the general shape then work in the main strands of hair by holding your pencil at a 45 degree angle for stroking and coverage. Then, as in the third picture, you can work in more details. But here's a TIP! Don't draw a straight line for the hairline. Do tiny strokes to represent beginning of hair at its root. Look at real people and see their hairline isn't a straight line. Practice and your picture will look more realistic.   STEP 15. This is the first start. This is where you would sketch in small circles or lines to shade the areas. It would take hours upon hours to cover all that area with a pencil. I chose to shade with pastels. In a few strokes I've got area coverage. Applied medium to dark gray to his face, hair, and shoulders. Black or charcoal gray to hair, side of nose and mouth. Looks like a mess, right? That's how a beginning project will appear. Keep patience with you and you'll have a great outcome.   STEP 16. What's interesting is I haven't used a pencil yet during this stage. I took a blending stump (since it won't leave lines and will cover a larger area) and shaded laying the stump tapered part flat (like a pencil). Then I took it's point and “drew” with it's pointed edge in the smaller areas (his hair, eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, cheeks, side of face, mouth, chin, and shoulders. I used a soft tissue to smooth his skin. I will be using a pencil soon for darkening and very refined areas.   STEP 17. I sketched in darker with my 0.7mm mechanical and 9B pencil his eyes & mouth. I placed my 9B pencil flat and barely touching the paper went over the darker side of his face. Between the shadowed hair strands (of the light hair strip area), I used the point of the 9B in circular motions. To blend, I twisted and circled my stump around like a windmill in his hair (very easy because large areas was all black). With my 9B, I added more definition to his tattoo and neck chain.   STEP 18. Drawing like this is a gradual buildup. I keep sketching, blending and sketching some more. This time, I first blended the pencil sketches with my toritillon to give a smooth transition. I added more dark tones and details to his hair, face, neck, and shoulders with a 9B graphite pencil. I've also took a kneaded eraser to add some highlights to his lip and nose. I had shaded in the left side of his eye whites, facing you.   STEP 19. I didn't need to add highlights on his face because they already stood out very well according to the picture reference. I smoothed his skin, hair, mouth, collar and shoulders a little more in my SAI program by blurring it. I added more hair detail in the stripe area. I gave some shine to his neck chain. I am closing out now. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on the amazingly gifted and music genius Wiz Khalifa.
