STEP 1. To draw DJ Quik, we should first sketch out some basic construction lines. Use a 2H or harder pencil and sketch very lightly so that the lines are easy to erase later on after we ink. Sketch the basic shape of the head and neck. The head should be tilted slightly. Be sure to draw crisscross construction lines for the center of the face, the eyes, nose, and mouth.   STEP 2. Now that the guide lines are in place, let's work on the eyes first. Be sure to draw the eyes resting on the mid horizontal guide line of the face so that they are properly placed. The eyes are almond shaped but only half open, so be sure to draw the creases of his eyelids well above the eyes. Be sure that the iris and pupils are looking directly at us, and leave a small white dot on each pupil for shine. Draw small creases under the eyes as well.   STEP 3. He has thin eyebrows, which in this case should be raised high on the forehead.   STEP 4. Make sure that the nose is perfectly in line with the vertical center guide line of the face. His nostrils should be wide, almost aligning with the pupils of the eyes. The nostrils have almost perfectly round openings. The tip of the nose should be slightly rounded as well.   STEP 5. To make things interesting, we can draw him biting his lower lip. Draw the upper lip rather large, with the corners of the lip pointing down. The bottom lip should be hidden but we should be able to see a few very faint creases in the skin peeking out from beneath the upper lip to indicate that the skin is being pulled tight.   STEP 6. Now draw the outer contours of the face and jaw line. From this angle, the jaw should arch upwards slightly in the middle. DJ Quick has a slender face, so keep that in mind.   STEP 7. Next, draw his facial hair on his chin and upper lip. It should be somewhat sparse and very short. There should just be a patch of whiskers on either side of his chin. His upper lip has a very thin mustache resting just on top of his lip.   STEP 8. Draw the ears on the sides of the head. At this angle, they will rest low on the head. The tops of the ears should align with the tip of the nose, the bottoms of the ears should align with the upper chin.   STEP 9. His hair can be pulled back tightly in corn rows. The upper hairline should be high on the head from our perspective. Draw a few stripes of bare skull between some of the rows of braided hair. You don't need to draw the individual braids since the hair will be completely blacked out later.   STEP 10. Now draw his neck which should be equally as wide as his face. Notice how the neck is not just two straight lines. Instead, the lines are curved, giving natural form to the figure. Go ahead and draw a couple strands of hair peeking out from behind his neck while you're at it.   STEP 11. Next, draw the upper portion of his shirt. Be sure to draw a couple of creases on either side of the collar.   STEP 12. If you wish, you can add a thick chain necklace hanging from his neck. Draw the various links looping through one another. Be sure that the necklace hangs low in the middle. Notice how the right side of the necklace rests more on his shoulder, rather than the left side which rests directly against the side of his neck - this makes things look more interesting.   STEP 13. We're now done penciling the image and we can move on to inks. Use either Micron markers, or a brush and India ink to do your inking. Carefully go over each line with patience and be sure not to ink any guide lines. When the ink has totally dried, erase your pencil marks with a kneaded eraser. You should now have a perfectly black and white image, but we're not quite done yet.   STEP 14. You can add a greater sense of depth to the image by giving it shadow. Use either a thick felt tip marker, or a brush and ink to do your shading. Establish your light source and black out the opposite side of the figure. The areas of heaviest shadow should be beneath the jaw, on the side of the nose, and on the side of the face. But make sure to leave a thin line of white on the side of his face to help the image "pop." Also be sure to also add shadow beneath the upper lip. Also black out the hair and shirt.   STEP 15. And you're done! If you need to make any corrections you can use white ink or opaque white paint. And that's how you draw DJ Quik! Nice!   Step 1. Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Step 6. Step 7.
